This uniform combo Air Force Shade 1548 was worn by SAC Elite Guards and by Little Rock AFB in 1979, Hill AFB in 1973, Azores in 1972, and wore it at Fairchild in late 70's  It was shorltly phased out in in the early 80's. This uniform combo was my favorite because it looked like a police uniform with all the ribbons and badge.  Also it was worn when we had the White Hat as you can see in the picture on the first page of my web site.

This uniform was worn at Little Rock AFB in 1980.

This uniform  Shade 1548, was always my favorite uniform because it looked so sharp.  It looks like a civillian police officers uniform

How many of you old guys remember the old stomp and drag

Learned the old stomp and drag with a M-16 with fixed bayonet. Fortunately we had the scabbards on them.

These badges were copied from the Army and were unauthorized by the Air Force. This badge dates back to pre Korean War times. Each Command or Squadron designed there own badge and utilized them until an official badge was authorized in 1959. This badge is also located at the USAF Security Police Museum at Lackland AFB TX.

The Cops

copsgrouping2.jpg

On a routine day they might direct traffic or guard the flight line. On the other hand, when an Air Force base is under  attack, Security Police are expected to fend off the enemy whether its a single terrorist or an entire battalion. In Operation Desert Storm, the evacuation plan for US air bases in Saudi Arabia didn't even include the SP's;    They were expected to stay in place  and hold back an Iraqi attack until a response force arrived.  SP's have been called "Air Police, "LE's (for Law Enforcement), Even "the Air Force own Infantry,"  By any name, they play an integral part in the fly-fight mission.
